Originally written and published in Swedish in 1915 under the title Svenskarna i Rhode Island, this book by John S. Osterberg is a fascinating window into the life of the early Swedes in Rhode Island, from the Viking explorations to North America to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when thousands of Swedes made Rhode Island their home. John Osterberg's four years of dogged research at a time when Swedish immigration was at its peak captured many stories, names and details that would have been lost to posterity without his timely intervention. Over 360 pages in length, with over 150 photographs and illustrations, it contains detailed information on Swedish social organizations, churches, choral societies, businesses, art, music literature, politics, noteworthy events, and prominent Swedes in various fields of endeavor. The author himself was instrumental in the founding of the first Vasa lodges in Rhode Island.
Translated into English for the first time, this book is now accessible to everyone with an interest in history and genealogy, particularly Swedish immigration and settlement in Rhode Island.
The volume also contains two valuable appendices, including a detailed history of the Swedish churches in Rhode Island from 1915-2023, by Lisa Penta, and the story of the Bjorling Male Quartet's visit to Rhode Island in 1920, by Kendall Svengalis. These add another 122 pages and 75 images.
